Storytelling as a Tool to Combat Stigma Surrounding Opioid Addiction

MILLBURN, NJ — As International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 approaches with the theme "Together we Can," the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey's Knock Out Opioid Abuse initiative highlights the community's critical role in addressing the opioid crisis. Individuals and families impacted by the crisis have shared personal experiences on the PDFNJ website, revealing the impact of the epidemic and emphasizing the importance of support.

"Storytelling plays a vital role in breaking down the stigma that often surrounds addiction," said Angelo Valente, executive director of PDFNJ. "When individuals share their experiences, it helps others see that they are not alone in their struggles, and it opens up pathways to support and recovery."

Supported by grants from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey's philanthropic arm, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, this program leverages the power of storytelling to build understanding and solidarity. By amplifying the voices of those affected, it aims to create a more supportive environment where individuals feel encouraged to seek help.
