BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP — Students and community members teamed up to educate the local community about the dangers of opioid abuse last weekend.

As part of Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day on Friday, members of the Bordentown Residents Against Drugs (BRAD) handed out over 3,000 door hangers containing information about opioid abuse to residents and businesses throughout the town, according to Kevin Moore, BRAD's municipal alliance coordinator.

In the school district, Neil Geiger, the Bordentown Regional School District's student assistance counselor, had his students collect and display 147 pairs of shoes, meant to signify the lives lost to opioid overdoses in Burlington County in 2016.

The organization continued its work over the weekend at the two-day 28th annual Cranberry Festival in Bordentown City. Members set up a booth to hand out pamphlets and literature on alcohol and drug abuse awareness and prevention. Over the course of the three days, the group was able to get information to about 5,000 people, Moore said.

“BRAD (Bordentown Residents Against Drugs) would like to express their gratitude and thanks to Boy Scout Troop 13 and their parents, our local teen volunteers, our families and citizens, the Bordentown Township police, the Bordentown City police, our city employees, Ms. Sallie Miller, our BRSD student assistance counselor Neil Geiger, and Councilman Eric Holliday,” he said in an email. “And we owe a special thanks to Mr. Paul Ciarrocca (local resident and businessman) for feeding us.”
