Supporting the Alternatives to PAIN Act

The opioid crisis has engulfed our nation, and the need for progressive and humane healthcare policies has never been more imperative. In this recent editorial, “Why We Need the Alternatives to PAIN Act,” published by NJ.com, I explain why this proposed legislation is a critical step forward in this regard.

In 2021, 1.1 million seniors were diagnosed with opioid use disorder, and 50,000 suffered an opioid overdose. These disturbing statistics occurred partly as a result of the current situation that exists, which allows for greater than necessary use of opioids by seniors insured through Medicare.

The legislation provides for easier access to non-opioid treatments and addresses other restrictions in place that should result in decreasing the number of seniors being prescribed an opioid. I encourage your support for this legislation.
