Greetings from the road! The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, along with our partners at the Drug Enforcement Administration – New Jersey Division, have embarked on the Do No Harm symposium 2014 tour with the kick-off event, Tuesday, at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ.

Do No Harm: A symposium to discuss ways to end prescription drug abuse
We’re less than a week away from the launching of the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey’s Do No Harm symposium series. The pilot program, which was held at Hackensack University Medical Center back in October 2013, was a rousing success and was attended by medical professionals, local, state, and local law enforcement, and prevention and treatment professionals to discuss possible solutions to the opioid epidemic gripping our state.

New Jersey #3 in the Country for Heroin Abuse
Last week, for the 10th year in a row, we gathered together some of the best young, musical talent in the state of New Jersey for a night of powerful prevention messages. When I think about some of the great songs that have been shared through our Shout Down Drugs competition, it's encouraging to know that there are concerned young people out there willing to use their talents to make a difference.

Narcan saving lives in Ocean County
If there any doubters out there that Narcan is a vital lifesaving tool for our first responders in ending the opioid epidemic gripping our state, then please consider this recent article from ABC 7. Thanks to Ocean and Monmouth Countys’ new pilot program, allowing for police officers and EMS personnel to carry Narcan, an antidote designed to reverse the effects of heroin overdose, 6 lives have already been saved this year.

Later tonight, we will be partnering with our friends from The Bridge in West Caldwell to host an important event educating parents about the opioid abuse issue gripping our state. It’s sure to be a great and informative night for families in the area and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Study says that marijuana use affects the brain
With the ever changing landscape of the marijuana legalization debate and new stories being published on a daily basis, this statement bears repeating: studies show that even casual marijuana use causes changes to the brain. According to a study sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse NIDA , casual marijuana users show abnormalities in the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens, two regions of the brain associated with emotion and motivation.
