A recent article details how Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is causing a significant increase in emergency room visits. CHS occurs due to long-term heavy cannabis use that causes nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report noted that, “From January 2023 through September 2025 the rate of ER visits involving CHS remained largely steady. But from October 2025 through May 2026, it jumped 370%.”
Individuals suffering from CHS often take hot showers or baths to relieve their symptoms. The only known way to stop CHS is to end one’s use of cannabis. As vaping cannabis is the primary method of use for younger individuals, the study noted that this method may contribute to developing CHS faster than smoking or using edibles. I encourage you to share this blog with others in the field, especially those who work with youth.
Schools and faith-based and community organizations can address marijuana use by scheduling PDFNJ’s 15 Minute Child Break Presentation, a free multi-media program that educates parents and other adult caregivers about recent drug trends and provides effective preventive strategies to communicate with kids about substance use and misuse.
