Empowering Student-Athletes: A Partnership to Combat the Opioid Crisis

Over the past year, PDFNJ has had the opportunity to connect with student-athletes across New Jersey, sharing critical information about the dangers of opioid misuse. Our mission to empower young people has been strengthened through meaningful community partnerships, thought-provoking discussions, and the inspiring engagement of the students themselves. These events were made possible through the generous support of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, whose commitment to community wellness has been instrumental in extending our reach.

Recently, former NFL quarterback Ray Lucas joined us to speak to students in Camden, shining a spotlight on the impact of opioid abuse and the importance of prevention. Ray's personal story of resilience and recovery resonated deeply, as he emphasized that no one is immune to the dangers of opioids — making education and awareness crucial for both athletes and their peers. You can watch a segment on 6ABC here.

Together with Horizon, we have visited schools across the state, partnering with educators, coaches, and local leaders to create a safe space for candid conversations about this pressing issue.  Our collaborating partner, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), further expanded our reach and impact.

What stood out most in these sessions were the students themselves. Their thoughtful questions about safeguarding their futures and supporting their friends demonstrate a remarkable level of maturity and concern. These young athletes are proving they are future sports stars and champions of their communities.

As we look to the upcoming year, we remain steadfast in our commitment to educate and inspire New Jersey's youth. By working together — with the help of partners like Horizon and NJSIAA, advocates like Ray Lucas, and the determination of the students themselves — we can help create a future free from the devastating grip of opioid abuse.

Thank you to all the schools, students, and partners who have made this important work possible. Let's continue to tackle this challenge head-on, one conversation at a time.
