New Study Highlights Medication Safety After Hospital Discharge

For many older adults and their families, leaving the hospital can feel like the finish line after a difficult health scare. But the days and weeks after discharge can be a vulnerable time, especially when new medications are added.

A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal looked at more than 1.8 million adults age 66 and older. Researchers found that older adults who filled a new sedative prescription within seven days of leaving the hospital had a higher risk of falls, emergency department visits, hospital readmission and death within 30 days after discharge. The medications studied included benzodiazepines, sedating antidepressants and antipsychotics.

These findings are an important reminder that every new medication should come with a clear reason, a clear plan, and close follow-up. Patients, families, and healthcare providers should discuss safer, non-prescribed treatment options first, especially when addressing sleep, anxiety, agitation or discomfort.

Through our Healthy Aging Campaign, the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey encourages older adults and caregivers to ask questions, understand medication risks and make informed decisions that support safer aging.
